Derby Road - roundabout
« on: June 10, 2015, 09:59:29 AM »
The lights are gone at last, but have you see where the bus stop has been put?
Why did they stick it there?
It's just before you get to the actual roundabout - daft places for bus stops ( and pedestrian crossings) seem to be the knew 'in thing' in and around Chesterfield!
I'm not even sure why they needed a bus stop just there anyway as there is one only a short walk from it - unless they are taking that one out??

I can't see the bus stop being a problem. Looks like cars will be able to overtake a stationary bus unlike at present with the other stop.

Lets wait and see how it goes when the cars are streaming off the housing estate in the busy periods

I heard last night one of the bus stops is illegal, and has to be removed. I've seen them today for the first time, and should there be a bus at both of them, it could be a problem for unsighted traffic trying to overtake these buses. However, the council make these decisions, so they will stand or fall by them. They hardly need the one on the way to Tupton because there is one before "the Wingerworth" former Hunloke. The other direction towards town, there is one again virtually opposite.
Why introduce 2 bus stops within yards of a roundabout? I'm guessing when the massive house building is completed that buses will be sent through the estate anyway - it makes business sense after all, so if stagecoach don't do it first, some other bus company will.Stagecoach will not miss out on that one.

That's the whole point of inconveniently placed bus stops - to inconvenience car drivers and persuade you a bus is quicker. It's used a lot in Sheffield where it's widely criticised by residents and commuters.

It was the tactic we used 20 years ago in Hasland as part of the traffic calming measures. Two bus stops opposite each other, a bus at each, cars have to slow down or stop, speeds reduce, accidents reduce.
Well till somebody at DCC decided they knew better and put the lights in. Remind me how did that turn out?

Please sshh no lights JR !!

I haven't actually taken a good long look at 'how/where' passengers will cross the road from the estate to get on the bus? From what I believe this is going to be a large housing development, with the one way in/out and so be quite a busy piece of road.

I just assumed that buses would go round the estate but from what scimitar says this isn't an automatic route - so will it have to be applied for scimitar?

The road leading from the roundabout is quite long and my thoughts were 'why couldn't two bus pull ins  have been incorporated on each side?

I'm assuming the housing estate - as large as its going to be will probably require buses to run through it rather than past it. New roundabout going in at Mill lane too soon, so further disruption ahead.

Aren't they running the road in the new estate through to Grassmoor/Hasland opposite Furnace Hillock Way?

I think it was suggested scimitar but was turned down as too expensive.

I can only presume that the cost for possibly disruption that would be payable to the railway company would make the whole project much less viable.

Resurfacing the pavement. H&S dictates half the road needs to be closed off :o
