Is that from Elder Way, looking over to Packers row.
I realise the black and white buildings that are now Oxfam are gone.
It's the 'No Entry' sign that's throwing me

Spot on Fly. I'm not sure about the No Entry either. I guess it was part of the one way system through town before pedestrianisation. I might have a pic of the knocking down of that lovely black and white building and the erection of the concrete monstrosity that now houses Oxfam.

I think it is the top of Packers Row where it met Knifesmithgate (where there are a few stalls these days) - you can see a car coming out of there - so there would have been another sign on the right hand side of the road.

Was wondering about all the flowers, buntings, then realised the date in Poppie's original post.
1952, coronation year

SWALLOWS if I'm not mistaken.
The clue is in the shop sign
when you think back to the labyrinth of roads back then that you could drive through - most of it is pedestrianised now. Much the same in other towns/cities.

Spot on mate, it's Swallows. Surprised Pete didn't notice it, his brother (bless him) worked there.

Sorry, I assumed, as Scimitar pointed out, that you could read the sign.

This is of course before High St and Burlington St were pedestrianised - with the latter being particularly narrow in places, would they have been one way the other way? The thing would make some sort of sense, if that were the case.

1st picture, Swallows but no Frank Yates
2nd picture, no Swallows, but Frank Yates in a black and white building.
Have I got this wrong. They rebuilt black and white buildings, and a concrete Oxfam block ??

The first pic was taken in the 1920s I think, when the were building the Golden Fleece, the large black and white building shown in the foreground of the second pic. The second pic was taken in the 60s when the knocked down Swallows and built the Oxfam block. It's a bit confusing.

That makes sense now Poppy
I automatically thought the 1st pic was a demolition site LOL
So just to add to the confusion. What was there before the Fleece LOL
