£125k cycle path for Chesterfield
« on: July 03, 2012, 04:28:41 PM »
Just read on the BBC website about a new cycle path to be built in Chesterfield.

"A new cycle path costing £125,000 will be created alongside the A61 in Chesterfield, Derbyshire.

The 370m (1,213 ft) path is being installed near the Whittington Moor roundabout as part of the Chesterfield cycle network."

Why are they doing this? There are only fourteen cyclists in Chesterfield and they ride on the bloody pavements!

What a waste of money...  >:(

I think the idea is that if we build it, they will come. An increase to sixteen in the number of borough cyclists would more than justify the expenditure.

Thanks for pointing out the obvious Stuart... My comments were not based on such high numbers of cyclists...  :P

Certainly Sir! What surface would like on that? Any extras? Cycle Stands, mini laybys?

£337 per metre - are they doing a Hitler and secretly making it strong enough for tanks?

Why not, blondes driving 4x4s have their own lane on the motorway, though I thought it was there for us all to use, for overtaking.

Don't be silly, cost of materials and manpower, £5000. The rest is for admin, risk assessments, health and safety checks, payment to highways agency for closing the road for 3 months to do 2 days work, etc, etc.

They recently spent several weeks, and god knows how much money, on a cycle lane at Brimington, running down alongside the crematorium. Though its not on the road, its part of the path, they changed quite a few curbs, widened the pavement, etc.
I wasn't too critical at the time as I know our council have so much money, and no concerns about care for the elderly, the young, education, normal road maintenance, and so on, or indeed, reducing our tax bill, they might as well spend it on meeting a few targets and ticking a few boxes.

I would like to see a good cycle network that allows cylclists, particularly youngsters, to get anywhere without having to use a main road. One day they might return to cycling to school like we did from the age of about 7 and get rid of the congestion nightmare at the gates of every school.

I wouldn't get on a bike for love or money - cycle lane or not.
I don't think drivers even notice there is a cycle lane there half of the time.
I (IMHO) think that there is far too much traffic on the roads to actively encourage people to take to bikes. I know some do, but I'd be scared to, specially at rush hour.

Yep - agree - just common sense really, I think we'd see an increase in kids having accidents because everyone is so busy and in a hurry these days.
