Yep - agree - just common sense really, I think we'd see an increase in kids having accidents because everyone is so busy and in a hurry these days.

I would like to see a good cycle network that allows cylclists, particularly youngsters, to get anywhere without having to use a main road. One day they might return to cycling to school like we did from the age of about 7 and get rid of the congestion nightmare at the gates of every school.

Not going to happen mate. End of.

370m for £125,000 and take 3 months to create.

Jesus F***ing t*tty Christ - Do the council have any clue what so bloody ever how much things should cost.  Things like this really make my p**s boil.   I completely despair at just how incompetent these utter morons are.
It makes you wonder how many meetings, planning, discussions, surveys etc all this has cost even before this decision was made.
This road is a main artery in to/out of town. Can you imagine the chaos this is going to cause?
People will seek alternative ways in to/out of town and further clog up already busy roads.
Folks will be late for work, buses won't run to time (nowt new there then).
I hope Severn Trent Water have finished their roadworks before all this starts! q?

I meant the cycle lanes with physical barriers fron the road not the one cars use to park in

Pretty much agreed, I don't think people pay enough attention to cyclists on the road whether there's a cycle path or not :s As much as I'd prefer to cycle everywhere, this wouldn't encourage me because too many people are dangerous on the roads.

I never really understood the logic of making cyclists ride on roads anyway.

Who is more likely to be seriously harmed- a pedestrian bumped by a cyclist or a cyclist hit by a car?
Hm :s
I was in Valencia in spain quite recently and that would have been a really nice place to cycle- most of the pavements were halved off between pedestrian/cyclist areas. Don't think I saw a single part where cyclists had to travel on the road. Makes me wish more of england was similar!

Or more things like this, yes.

edit- Unless I've been daft and it is actually not on the road? Hard to tell from that article.

By all means cycle on the pavement if you're intimidated by busy traffic. But do it at the average speed of a pedestrian. That way, if one walks out of a shop and into your path, you'll be able to stop. All of this:

depends entirely upon speed, and the different speeds and directions of the respective objects. Having experienced a few pavement near misses between me and cyclists who, frankly, behave like the very motorists that cyclists bang on about, I can imagine that a 12-stone man with a set of pointy handlebars can do quite a bit of damage when travelling at an inappropriate speed.

And I can't look at that photo of Mary Hopkin without wondering if her guitar and her legs were made out of the same bit of wood.

They really aught to get onto sorting out the Hasland Road/ The Green fiasco and get the roundabout back YESTERDAY if possible, before stretching themselves into doing cycle lanes. Also, to keep up with the times, I've noticed that there seems to be more and more disabled electric buggies doing the rounds on the roads nowadays. Can we have a lane for them too please and also, can we retro fit them with indicator cancellers as they nearly always have them flashing some 7 days after they initially turned the corner. Rant over and back to bed zzZZzz

A worthwhile point. One shot past me in The Pavements yesterday. Old boy must have had "Love" and "Hate" tattooed on his knuckles and Steppenwolf on the personal stereo.

True story:
About 10 year ago. I called at the newsagents in Shuttlewood one evening on my way to our_lasses after work.
Bought whatever, opened the shop door, stepped out side and 'BANG'.
I found my self on the floor about 12 foot down the pavement, sweating, heart racing, trembling and very disorientated.
I tried to figure out what was happening. That's when I realised I was lying on a BMX ???
Looking back up the street, a few feet away, there was a lad getting off the back of a car, holding his head.
Still totally bewildered by it all, I realised he'd just cowtailed me down the street.
I got up and asked him if he was ok ??
He replied "Yes, sorry mate".
I said "You shouldn't be on the fu*in pavements".
He hung his head, got his bike and walked off.
I crossed the road, got in the car and drove off.
It was only when I walked into the house, and our_lass screamed, did it hit me.
I burst into tears, sobbed "I've been knocked down", walked into the dining room and sat on the floor with my back to the wall. A total mess.
After a while, we'd both composed ourselves. She wanted me to go to hospital, I wouldn't go cos my head hurt.
I didn't fancy a night in the Royal, I knew they would keep me in overnight.
I was totally white, got slight bleading from my nose, chin, ear, head, hands. I'd got scuff marks on my shoulders, back, hips, thighs, legs, knees, shins and ankles. I was also starting to ache everywhere.

After a few phone calls the next day, turns out the kid was 15 years old and heavier than me. I didn't press charges, his mother did apologise for his actions.

The point of all my rambling. If I'd have been 65, 75, 85, not 35, I seriously think I'd be dead. Brittle bones etc.

There's no place for adult, teenage cyclists on pavements. Get on the road !!
Just remember though, you don't own the bloody thing. Nipping between cars in queues, jumping red lights etc.
Yes I did take my cycling proficiency test as a child, we weren't taught any of the tricks you see cyclists do nowadays.
I was also a member of a cycling club back in the late 70's and have thousands of miles under my belt as a cyclist.
