Chesterfield to get its very own cancer centre
« on: April 08, 2015, 06:06:46 PM »
Poached from scimitar  ;)

I would love to see this happen, not sure where they plan to build it though - any ideas?

I've trekked across to the Hallamshire Neuro dept for years with daughter and would love to see the facilities for more scanners and a neuro clinic/ward implemented eventually into these plans - just wondering where on earth will it go????

Major step forward in fight against disease as cancer hospital is set to open in Chesterfield
Extra £2.5million needed to make dream a reality – and that’s where you come in
Derbyshire Times, Chesterfield Royal Hospital and Macmillan Cancer Support sound fundraising plea

HAVE YOUR SAY
Chesterfield is to get its very own cancer hospital, the Derbyshire Times can exclusively reveal.

As many as 9,000 people are receiving cancer care in north and north east Derbyshire on any one day.

Now, for the first time, Chesterfield is in line for a specialist centre specifically designed to give the help people in our area need.

The new £8.9 million cancer centre has just one aim – to transform the services offered to people facing the toughest battle of their life.

The scheme, which was granted planning permission on Tuesday, will see a purpose built facility that provides a single point of access to all appropriate assessment, treatment and support services.

The new centre will provide all outpatient chemotherapy and clinical haematology services in one place.

It will all be housed in a new building based at Chesterfield Royal Hospital and is due to open in the autumn of 2016.

It is a massive project with Macmillan Cancer Support working alongside the Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust to fund the new building – which will be named the Chesterfield Royal Macmillan Cancer Centre.

The total cost will be £8.9 million.

The Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust has already committed £6.4 million.

Today Macmillan, with support from the Derbyshire Times, is launching a fundraising appeal for the remaining £2.5 million needed.

At the minute the oversubscribed facilities at the Royal Hospital the outstanding staff, no matter how hard they try, cannot always treat everyone.

Patients often need to travel further afield for treatment or be admitted to hospital overnight.

There is a lack of space which means patients suffer cramped conditions and it’s not possible for everyone with cancer to have their friends or family with them during their chemotherapy treatment.

The situation is so bad there isn’t even room for patients to receive treatment or information about their diagnosis in private.

At Chesterfield Royal Hospital there are already 15 Macmillan professionals including clinical nurse specialists, acute oncology nurses, information and support specialists and welfare benefits advisors.

Their expertise, innovative approach and history of successful partnerships with the public and private sectors puts the town in a unique position.

They understand what’s needed to create worldclass cancer care.

And now they are working to deliver just that.

It is about making sure hospital staff are able to provide the best possible cancer care, covering all aspects of their life, not just their medical needs.
