Just got back from the switching on ceremony - what a farce...

Why do it in New Square when that wouldn't accommodate a quarter of the folks who showed up?

As to the lorry trailer thing they used as a stage - they had a little banner in the middle of the back but the rest was just a loppy, scruffy lorry curtain - looked awful.

Cheap and nasty springs to mind!

TBH Fly, it wouldn't have made much difference. Very disappointing.

Lets put it this way Fly - that's 45 minutes of my life I won't get back...

Must admit ccthe council have made a lot of cutbacks. There's no light's at the old Coop/Elder Way or Knifesmithgate.
Wonder if they are saving a few quid towards the new Queens Park Leisure Centre ?

The Co-op used to light their own shop and the bridge over Elder Way (same as Dents with the Star.
The switch on has always been in New Square (must be 30 years now?) because thats where the focus is with the big tree.
Short of clearing the main market square (which would cost money to knock the stalls down after Saturdays market and have them rebuilt by Monday) I don't see where lese you can do it.

Going to be strange not seeing the Co-Op building all lit up always looked nice when Christmas lights were on the Tudor section. With regards to the towns Christmas lights it all boils down to money.

It might have been in another place (and I'm not bothering re-activating my account just to check) but didnt we have a discussion in the past about some money for Christmas lights that either didnt get spent on lights or was felt could be better spent elsewhere?

I don't remember which year it was but I seem to recall that money was given by central government for a council back to work scheme. However the said money was spent on Christmas lights which it was not meant for I'm not sure if the government of the day made them pay it back?

I gave up going quite a few years ago.
Too squashy and can't see a thing - waste of time.
Only place I can think of as an alternative is Queens Park and make more of a feature /Christmas Theme around the Park.
Alas I am thinking it would be vandalized.
