Sara Ege beat her seven-year-old son to death for failing to learn the Qur'an by heart and then burned his body in an attempt to hide her crime has been jailed for life.

Cardiff crown court heard that Ege treated her son Yaseen "like a dog" when he struggled to memorise passages of the holy book of Islam. She beat him on the hands and his body until he collapsed on the floor of his bedroom and died.

Ege said she frequently promised herself that she would stop attacking her son but could not resist beating him. She claimed she had been urged on by the devil and bad spirits. At one point she believed the stick she used to punish her son was possessed by an evil spirit.

Sara Ege was a mathematics graduate...

This is why I struggle when I am told to respect other people's faith.

Terrible thing to happen, doesn't matter which culture we are from some people just lose the plot don't they. This woman must have had a reason (other than her son being unable to remember as she did) - who knows maybe she was treated badly at some time in the past?????

Maybe - the story did say:

"Ege later retracted her account of what had happened and claimed her husband and his family had forced her to make the confession. She accused her husband, who stood trial with her, of being a violent bully and the real killer."

I have heard of cases with Muslim/Eastern/tribal/traditional/honour issues where a wife has been pressured by the husband to take the blame - they can be very misogynistic - an example being the current Indian rape case.

I find it difficult to believe that religious belief causes so much wrong in this world, and always has done, yet it does, and will continue to.
Surely, if you "believe",you should embrace others. But no, religion causes more conflict over the globe than anything else.
Countries who live side by side fight.
I don't know what else to say, If there is a "God", its about time he came back and smacked some arses.
