oscar pistorius back in court today
« on: June 13, 2016, 06:52:17 PM »
This trial has been long and drawn out.

Today we start yet another week of various people stand up in the court and give evidence/details about Oscar.

The psychologist stood up today and gave a lengthy report of his findings when he spoke with Oscar.
The psychologist's conclusion is that Oscar who has metal health problems should not be sentenced to prison as this would be the wrong place for him to be.

To me it's like years ago when the elderly who had Dementia were put away into a psychiatric home. Today they are looked after properly and given dignity.

Defence is arguing heatedly against this.

Personally I don't agree that anyone who has mental health problems should be put in prison.

If our world cannot help these people by providing somewhere such as a specialist hospital to aid their recover ( even if only partially ) it has to be a crime in itself.

Looking at Oscar today, he appears to have 'shut down'

What he did was wrong - but shut him away in a prison - no.

We will know at the end of the week.

I'm sure there must be secure units for people with mental issues like him who have commited murder etc

The prosecution want him to be given a long prison sentence, it won't help his recovery.
I think he's just being seen as a naughty person who has committed murder not a person who is mentally unstable and in need of a lot of help.

Do others think he should be sent to prison?

Is Oscar Pistorius not a convicted murderer then? I wonder if he were not a celebrity whether he would receive different treatment.

From what I understood at the beginning of the week, the question was - was he in a fit state of mind to go to prison. Well that was from his psychologist.
Have to admit I didn't get the chance after that first day to watch the case being reviewed.

Yes he is a murderer, but if he is deemed mentally unstable I personally don't agree that prison is the right place for him - neither did I think him been given voluntary work instead of prison was a good idea - certainly not at this stage in his life.

I thought I heard sentencing was to be in July??

Has anyone else got a better update on it than me please?

If anyone has taken a life and found guilty then regardless of weather that person is mentally ill or not they should be sent to prison. Theirs a danger here that every killer will try to plead mental health problems to get a lighter sentence which is unfair on the victims family who rightly want to see justice done. It should be remembered a life has been lost it can not be replaced I don't understand why people want to paint a killer as the victim and their for should be treated with sympathy very wrong in my eyes.

Not having been able to keep up with this trial I've lost quite a bit of detail - but -

What i have just found out that 'Psychiatrists' say Oscar was in sound mind when he killed his girlfriend.

We are told also that Oscar suffered fight or flight ( often seen in people with attachment disorders but I don't know that Oscar has that condition? ) and could over react when he felt under threat?

Pity he didn't get help for this before this happened!

This to me makes a difference - psychiatrists are I think a notch up from psychologists.

So - the psychologist was speaking of Oscar's 'current' state of mind'

I have to now agree he should go to prison with a lot of therapy input/meds but also protected as he is a vulnerable person without his prosthesis on and appears to feel generally at a disadvantage because of this.

I don't agree that any one who murders should just be put in prison and left without the correct help though.

July I think is the sentencing?

I watched the interview and to be honest he came across as full of self pity with maybe a tad of remorse for what he did.
He told the interviewer - I don't want to waste my life in prison.
