Win a bin and give your recycling habits a boost
Did you know that if everyone in Derbyshire recycled one toothpaste box, it would save enough energy to run a fridge in over 30 homes for a year?
And that's not the only thing lurking in the bathroom that can be recycled. Empty plastic bottles for shampoo, bleach, bathroom cleaners and liquid soap can all be recycled along with aerosols and toilet roll inner tubes − but how many of us actually take our recycling habits beyond the kitchen?
The theme for this year's Recycle Week (22 to 28 June 2015) is 'Recycling around the home' and we will be out giving help and advice to local people to help them expand their recycling routine from the kitchen to the bathroom and beyond on:
Thursday 25 June 2015 − Dronfield − Co-op, 10am to 4pm
Friday 26 June 2015 − Langley Mill − Asda, 10am to 4pm
Councillor Dean Collins, cabinet member for highways, transport and infrastructure, said:
"People living in Derbyshire recycle more now than they ever have, but there's always room for improvement.
"Most of us are used to recycling things like plastic milk bottles, glass jars and packaging from the kitchen. But we want more people to expand their recycling habits beyond the kitchen and recycle items from other rooms around the house too.
"We're committed to helping people to reduce, reuse and recycle more of their waste. It's better for the environment and cheaper than sending rubbish to landfill which produces carbon emissions which contribute to climate change."
Good to know
Plastic shampoo and moisturiser bottles can all be accepted for recycling, along with liquid soap, bleach and bathroom cleaner bottles.
You can recycle empty aerosol cans such as deodorant and hairspray using your kerbside recycling scheme. If everyone in Derbyshire recycled one aluminium air-freshener aerosol, enough energy could be saved to vacuum more than 10,000 homes for a year!
