Title: Band Marathon today in Queen's Park
Post by: Gerty Gumdrop on September 09, 2012, 09:53:14 PM
Did anyone else go to this event?  I only found out about it via Chesterfield Post on Twitter.  I didn't see it advertised in The Derbyshire Times, but I thought it sounded very appealing and decided to go.

We went along and took a disabled friend with us, and on arrival Ashover Brass Band were playing which was nice, then as a bonus for our friend there was a cricket match on.

I thought music-wise it was going to be a diverse afternoon with other brass bands, choirs and some rock bands.  Well, I must have missed it or gone deaf because apart from Ashover, and a rock band called Highly Strung who did a set of 60's numbers, there was nothing else, so we packed up and went home.  Also I would have expected more people to be around, but if it wasn't advertised very well I'm not suprised it was poorly attended.

On a postive note however, what people WERE there were families playing together on the grass, couples strolling companiably, plus a few snoggers who needed to go get a room, but it was all very nice.

My only REAL gripe of the day was that our friend couldn't get his wheelchair up the ramp to the cafe.  He has a motorised one and its a bit wide.  The ramp looks only wide enough for a baby's buggy.  We managed to take some spare chairs from the cafe to the bottom of the ramp and we sat and had our lunch down there, but minus a table.  A bit awkward, trying to balance a cup of coffee and a plate of sandwiches - like being at the proverbial vicarage tea party  ;)

Damn! I never saw it advertised anywhere either, or I'd have gone too (lucky escape for you that I didn't though eh?!)  ;)

I saw a tweet from @chesterfieldbc inviting bands/musicians to get involved... the only problem being they sent the link out TWO DAYS AFTER the closing date... or we'd have tried to be involved.
