Well, as from tomorrow I'm doing my bit with the RVS as a Home Library Service volunteer.  This is not to be confused with Mobile Library Service by the way.

I shall be visiting elderly housebound people in their homes and helping them choose books, chatting about their reading likes and dislikes together with taking back any books they've had during the last month.  Volunteers are encouraged to stay for a quick cuppa and a chat, although its down to the volunteer how long they choose to stay.

I have training tomorrow at Chesterfield Library.  I've already met some of the other volunteers and everyone is incredibly friendly.

 ;D

Sounds very rewarding Gerty, I hope all goes well for you.
I started out with nothing and I've still got most of it left.

I intend to spend my spare time doing something just for me for a change and also spend sometime with hubby doing things we used to do.

I was asked a few weeks ago to sit on a committee of a local history society which I have accepted - I will enjoy that and they caught me just at the right time as I resigned from my work in March and so have some time to spare.

All too soon people find themselves too old or ill to actually have some life to do just what they want, if a person chooses as Gerty has, to give her time delivering books and spending time  ( which will no doubt give her much pleasure ) with people who will really appreciate it - then that has to be good.

However to dictate to someone of pensionable age how they should fill their time is inappropriate in my book.

I've worked for 51 years, now this time in my life is for me to choose what I do with it.

Totally agree with Fly's comment to Pam.  I've also worked for 50 years, and sometimes doing 3 jobs at once.  We deserve our retirement - we've damned well earned it.  I think Lord Bichard (the guy at the centre of all this controversy) must reside on a different plant to the rest of us!

Good luck Pam in your own retirement - go please yourself - be a lady wot lunches - have treats - relish the time with your husband.  If you want a cohort to join you in anything disgraceful, you know where I am  ;D
