Trace Derbyshire's First World War history

I have had this come and think it will be very interesting to follow up some of the links to read about our ancestors and their lives back then.

Has an emotional week marking the 100th anniversary of WWI starting made you want to find out more?

Our archives can help you experience what life was like for people in Derbyshire and the soldiers who left here to fight.

We have a wealth of photographs, letters and documents at our Record Office telling the story from a local point of view.

You can also take a look at our Picture the Past website which features hundreds of thousands of images recalling Derbyshire's history over the last hundred years or more.

We've got loads more information and details of local events marking the centenary of the outbreak of WWI.

Meanwhile, our 'Derbyshire Lives Through the First World War' project could help you stage your own WW1 community commemoration.

We've secured a Heritage Lottery Fund grant to fund project officer Glynn Wilton to work with local community groups, provide information and advice about staging events and help to find sources of financial support. You can find out more about the project from Glynn on 01629 539217 or glynn.wilton@derbyshire.gov.uk

Our Record Office in Matlock is a great place to find out more.

Online resources

We are digitising Derby and Derbyshire's First World War documents so you can view them through our online catalogue. Take a look at our First World War documents online (opens in a new window).

Also see Derby and Derbyshire's First World War photographs (opens in a new window) on Picture the Past (opens in a new window).

Derbyshire Lives through the First World War project

We have received funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund for a project to support Derbyshire communities in commemorating the war. We don't have funding to give away, but we can help you to develop a project and find money to run it. You can find more information about local First World War projects, support, training and events on the Derbyshire Lives blog (opens in a new window).

Derbyshire Remembers project

Fifth Word Theatre, in partnership with Derbyshire Record Office, Derby Local Studies Library and the National Trust is exploring the city and county's First World War history with primary schools in Derby and Sudbury. For more information contact record.office@derbyshire.gov.uk.

There's a Featherstone on Clowne's cenotaph. I can't find any family connection though.
